On the other side

The Puget Sound VA Medical Center sits on American Lake, and is surrounded by impoverished communities of disabled veterans. (The New York Times reported that 30% of the population of the Lakewood neighborhood, known as Lake City, around the medical center lives below the poverty line. Steilacoom, Washington, the other community between the VA medical center and Fort Lewis, has a population in which 40% of the residents live below the poverty line.) There are no grocery stores in Lake City or Steilacoom.
