Are you saying that you can only take the derivative with respect to time? Because this is wrong. Not as wrong as putting a straight line across what is obviously non-linear data, but wrong nevertheless. While there may be a case to make against the rule, this is not the one you are trying to make here (because the idea is not that having 4 R01 will result in less citation that 3, it is that the gain from going from 3 to 4 is lower than when going from 2 to 3, ergo, derivatives).
