The Post-it Note Project:
A way to unclutter your life

I’ve found a way to clear some of the clutter I live with out of the way, using 3M™ Post-It Notes and Tape Flags.
Do you have a kitchen utensil holder like this one?

Or maybe a drawer full of cooking gadgets? How do you know which ones you use and which ones are just taking up space? Here’s how:

Get some of these adhesive tape flags from 3M™ Post-it. Add one to every single utensil and kitchen gadget now. It will look very colorful! Here’s the important part, as you use each item remove its tape flag. It will get washed and put back into its place in the drawer or holder. Wait a pre-determined amount of time, say 1 month. Then check which utensils or gadgets still have the tape flags. Those are the ones you aren’t using. Maybe a few are very specialty items, used once or twice a year. OK, save those if you must, but get rid of the rest. Donate them.
What you will probably find is you don’t need 10 wooden spoons. Suddenly there is more space and less clutter than before!
You will have to train your family to help you with this experiment if you don’t live alone. I wouldn’t recommend doing this around the holidays. Maybe a fresh start in January?
This same process works with other items. Are there books in your bookcase you never touch? Give each book a post it note and check back after six months or so. Put a tape flag on every pair of pants you own, and check back after a few weeks to see which you aren’t using.
I recently moved from wire hangers for my clothes to plastic ones. As I hang up the laundry, I put everything on plastic hangers. When I take garments out of the closet, I throw away the old wire hangers. So it is really obvious now a month later which clothes I am actually wearing just by looking at the hangers. I’m going to give this another month and then start donating the items I am clearly not wearing.
Take on a Post-it Project as a way to unclutter your spaces. And thanks to 3M™ for making these great items!
