These monuments do not “glorify a shameful part of American history.” They honor dead people, period. The majority of these monuments were placed by women’s groups in order to honor their dead loved ones and to honor veterans. All of history should be presented in not just critical context but in fair context, not painting stereotypes with a broad judgmental brush but looking at the whole picture objectively. Categorizing all statues as racist and all Confederates as “fighting for dehumanization” is simply not true if one takes the time to actually study history without presentism, without bias, and with a dose of objectivity. Everyone’s opinion is valuable, and until we realize that we will never have equality. There are many books out there that discuss the history of Confederate monuments and why they were erected. I would encourage everyone to read them and learn.
