2017 Season Flashback Series: April 5:

Sports involve mental skills as much as they involve physical skills. As an athlete I had some specific mental weaknesses that remained inadequate my whole career. I’ve read mental skills can be trained and how to train for them; I’m simultaneously skeptical and hopeful.
First meet nerves are off the charts. One first time high jumper is close to tears in her fear of embarrassing herself. As she uses the relaxation technique we practiced this week, she is pleasantly surprised that it works! She feels calmer and more focused. It still takes two erratic attempts to settle her down before a nice third jump, but she trusts me at a new level. And I trust my research a little more.
