One of the unexpected joys of coaching is I occasionally get to assemble and build things, not unlike my former job as a carpenter/pile driver/millwright. We got new pole vault standards last year, assembly required. I started putting them together, but one morning this week I finally remembered to bring the right tools to finish the job.

I took my kids up to the track to let them run around while I worked. Figured I might be able to patch the holes in the high jump pit cover as well while we were there.

My boys had fun circling the tiny holes with sidewalk chalk, but we gave up when we realized every square inch needed to be patched. It’s a public track and the high jump pit seems to be a magnet for unsupervised middle schoolers. Plus, somehow people are always walking on the cover with their spikes. I’d love to request a new cover but I can’t figure out how to preserve it if we got one. I guess for now we’ll have to continue high jumping into a brisk pool of water. Just an extra way for the athletes to develop toughness!
