Have fun. Move fast and (break) build things.

These words were included in the title of our first bootcamp assessment @Coder Academy. Never before in any industry had I heard these words. Finally the permission to take risks and think outside the box. Coding gives you the biggest blank page to create. If you want to move fast and break things, you cannot shy away from risk. The biggest mistake you can make is not making any mistakes. As Zuckerberg says:

“In a world that’s changing really quickly the only strategy where you’re guaranteed to fail is not taking any risk and not changing anything.”

Two weeks into learning Ruby we are tasked with creating an app. Luckily Ruby Gems shine bright to provide us with plug ins of code to use within our project. We called our app ‘Slango’. This app would merge grammar and slang checking into one. We creating a pitch deck. This is my first step to becoming an appreneur. I can’t wait to start working with Rails to complete the package.

In weeks 3 and 4 we’ve also started exploring the world of web development, with html, css and bootstrap. We’ve made our own versions of CSS Zen Garden by working purely through CSS. The HTML is already provided and, without changing it at all you style your Zen Garden purely through a CSS stylesheet. I tried a parallax design as those are my favourite websites at the moment.

This week was science week and I went along to a Women in STEMM Australia meet up. There I met some amazing women. They focussed on may issues they are very relevant to me right now. It began with an inspirational speech from Leanne Enoch MP talking about switching the “how” we do what we do to “why” we do what we do. The meaning behind the why we do something is so much more important.

They discussed how shared care is essential if women are to succeed in STEMM roles. I have two young children and my husband is the one who has taken on the role of the carer whilst I focus on learning to code. I would not be able to do this full time and live remotely without his support. I miss my family everyday but I too have to keep reming myself of the “why”.
