It’s a cute joke: “ Do you know what they call alternative medicine that’s been proved to work? Medicine.”

Until the other shoe drops. “Do you know what ‘works’ means”?

Works means “does not cure”.

Comparisons of medicines and alternative medicine are basically competitions between a conventional medicine (that does not cure) and an alternative medicine (that does not cure).

The winner is the medicine that “does not cure better”.

Maybe it’s a sick joke, but the joke is on us. Any conventional medicine that competes with an alternative medicine in a clinical study “does not cure”. If it cures, there is no need for a clinical study to determine which medicine “does not work” better.
