Pure socialism abhors community, destroys community. It bans meetings of small groups of people who might oppose the government. It bans opposition parties, large and small. It creates a system where there is only the government and the individual —and the government rules. Pure socialism loves the individual because the individual has no power and individuals present no danger to the establishment.

Does this sound familiar?

Pure capitalism abhors community, destroys community. It destroys labour organizations. It destroys political organizations. When it can’t destroy communities, it channels them into “safe” behaviours. It allows people to vote for one of two political parties. Pure capitalism loves the individual because the individual has no power —and individuals buy more stuff than communities. Buying useless stuff keeps them busy.

Freedom, true freedom, does not reside in the individual if the individual is not free to organize and rule their many and various communities. Freedom does not come from voting for one of the acceptable candidates, who meet the qualification criteria. For true freedom to exist requires freedom of associations, all associations. Pure socialism and pure capitalism abhor freedom of association. Both function by divide and conquer. Socialism pretends to satisfy the needs of the individual, but cannot function if individuals begin to exert community power. Capitalism lauds the individual because alone, the individual can only be a nuisance, not a force, not a power.

Health can only be found in the balance between individuals and communities. Many communities. Many layers of communities. When political communities have no power, they cease to exist. That’s how capitalism works. That’s how socialism works. That’s how they fail as well.
