In September 2015, a groundbreaking conference held in New York under the auspices of the United Nations marked a pivotal moment in global history. World leaders came together to commit to an ambitious agenda aimed at tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time. The result was the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a comprehensive plan designed to secure a better future for billions of people worldwide and the planet itself. This agenda is underpinned by 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which have set a new universal standard for development aimed at ensuring that no one is left behind.

The Essence of the SDGs

The SDGs are a bold commitment to eradicate poverty, counteract climate change, and fight injustice across the globe. These goals represent an unprecedented scope of international cooperation, with 193 countries coming together to endorse this universal call to action. The underlying indicators of the SDGs offer clear, measurable benchmarks that allow for the tracking of progress and hold countries accountable for their commitments.

Bridging Society 5.0 and Well-being Society 6.0

The journey towards achieving the SDGs is intrinsically linked with the evolution of societal models, from the current focus on Society 5.0 to the envisioned Well-being Society 6.0. Society 5.0, as conceptualized by Japan, is a human-centered society that leverages technology and innovation to solve societal challenges, transcending the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and well-balanced future.

However, to fully realize the ambitions of the SDGs, a transition towards Well-being Society 6.0 is advocated. This envisaged society extends the concept of well-being beyond mere charity, embedding it within the fabric of organizational and societal governance, as well as in the domain of education, especially higher education. This progression requires a holistic understanding and integration of well-being in all aspects of life, ensuring that societal advancements contribute to the sustainable development and prosperity of all.

The Role of Non-Human Actors in Society 5.0

A unique aspect of Society 5.0 is its inclusivity of non-human intelligent actors within its framework, acknowledging the role of artificial intelligence, robots, and other cyber-physical systems as integral members of society. This post-humanized vision of society underscores the complexity of future societal models, where human beings coexist with intelligent systems in a shared ecosystem. The collaboration between humans and these non-human entities will be crucial in addressing the multifaceted challenges outlined in the SDGs.

Navigating the Unpredictability of Social Changes

The transition towards Society 5.0 and beyond is fraught with unpredictability, underscoring the importance of preparing for the unforeseen consequences of rapid social changes. This necessitates a reevaluation of current approaches to governance, business, and societal behavior from a holistic standpoint. Embracing the SDGs within this context requires a flexible, adaptive, and innovative approach to ensure that societal transformations contribute positively to global sustainability and well-being.

Conclusion

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals offer a visionary framework for global development over the next decade and beyond. Achieving these goals necessitates a collaborative effort that spans nations, industries, and societies. The evolution from Society 5.0 to Well-being Society 6.0 presents an opportunity to redefine the trajectory of global development, embedding sustainability, inclusivity, and well-being at the heart of our collective future. As we embark on this journey, the lessons learned and the strategies employed will undoubtedly shape the legacy of our generation, ensuring a sustainable and equitable world for future generations.
