The Police Have Confirmed North Korean Connection in Bitcoin Exchange Phishing

It has been revealed that hackers from North Korea sought to steal Bitcoin from exchange in South Korea.

This information comes several weeks after the cybersecurity firm FireEye published a report on the attacks.

The NPA, National Police Agency of the Republic of Korea have confirmed that the allegations are true. Detailing that 25 employees at four exchanges were targeted in 10 ‘spear phishing’ attempts.

Spear phishing is where a hacker pretends to be someone else in order to gain access to the victim’s login details.

The police report also suggested that the hacking attempts also targeted smartphones, suggesting that they may have been attempting to compromise devices used for two-factor authentication.

Furthermore, the NPA indicated that none of the investigated attempts resulted in either the loss of funds or an actual security breach, according to AFP. No exchanges were identified in the report.
