How the pursuit of aesthetics limits the movement practice
The pursuit of aesthetics is the will of changing one’s body composition to meet the criteria presented as defining beauty in the society. The movement practice gathers all the actions implemented to stimulate the body and develop its features.

The “best version of yourself”
The fitness industry growth is linked to the developement of self branding on social media. If you believe Instagram, we are living in a dream. No surprise when we see the same aesthetics the marketing is selling for years. To be successfull and grow your audience, yo uhave to be a fit girl with thigh gap or strong and shredded man.
The industry got it and pushes training methods that would help you to build muscle or reduce fat. Gyms open on every street corner and plenty of people sweat there to become the “best version of themselves”. The one that will get them closer to the beauty criterias.
A coin or a diamond ?
Shoutout to you all making your life more active. However this pursuit of aesthetics limits the movement practice. We reduce it to workouts that aim at gaining muscle and loosing fat. Thus we see our body as a two sided coin instead of a diamond with multiple facets.
We miss worlds waiting for our body to explore them. Hanging as monkeys, handbalancing with body awareness inverted (handstand), trying new walking patterns (locomotion), breathing work and flexibility. And the list is way longer !
Movement and cognitive development
There is an even more important aspect. Our brain develops when we learn a new movement. Once we dominate it, the cognitive stimulus is dractically reduced. That is why it is so important to stay curious in our movement practice to keep learning.
Anima sana in corpore sano. Healthy mind in a healthy body.
