What a strange article.
First, Google and Amazon are not natural competitors. Google-as-an-online-shopping-platform aka Google Shopping died a horrible death a long time ago. Google’s core product — online visibility — is still dominating the market, is practically a monopoly, and no one has a realistic chance of getting close, much less dethroning it.
There are two ways a big company can fail: either a failing core business, or betting way too much money on gigantic side projects that turn out to be flops of epic proportions.
If Google fails, it’s more likely to do so because of Google Car, not because of competitions in the online ads market.
