7 Mindfulness Techniques for Everyday Life.
- Get to know your suffering. Understand yourself to your core stripped of all baggage you carry around, your rose colored “positivity” glasses, and your dark cloud of shame.
- Reduce harm, and misery. Try to NOT be judgemental. Like, if you notice you are thinking, “ugh look how fat they are”, or conversely, “look how fat I am” don’t follow where that story goes. The thought comes in, and let it go. Consciously move your motivation away from those that are around you to just you and what you can do.
- Stop. Before you open you mouth take a minute to see if you are saying anything that might break technique #2.
- Actions speak louder than words. Well, in some cases, but let’s just talk for a minute about “doing the right thing.” Seriously let’s just remind ourselves of the big “no-nos” in life. Don’t kill, Don’t steal, Don’t be dumb about who you have sex with.
- Living consciously by “making a living”. Man is this guy getting serious? Look you don’t want rules, but life has a few simple ones. If you think mindfulness does not have structure then you do not know what mindfulness is. When you consider mindful jobs try not to do any of these: buying/selling or creating of weapons, buying or selling of living beings, buying/selling or processing of meat, buying/selling or manufacturing of alcohol/drugs, buying/selling or manufacturing of poisons. All those tech start-ups seem to be very safe. Yeah, this is kinda a problem in this world of micro breweries, and pot legalization. You can have lots of free booze, and pot, but making it a business is a different thing. Same goes with meat. Grow your own chickens is cool, but stop there.
- Self motivation to stay mindful. Life that is well lived is work. Love is work. If you want mindfullness to flourish you must stick with it. Abandoning that which is detrimental to being the you, that is a mindful you, is essential.
- Try meditating. E gads, they go hand in hand! Yep. You were really hoping I would not haul that one out, but there it is right at the end. I encourage you to go in this direction because mindfullness boosted by meditation makes life easier. I also encourage you to seek some guidance with meditation, and to find a place to do it with and without other people around.
If you read all that and still want more pick up some Buddhist Scriptures. The base inspiration for this list is the Noble Eightfold Path. If you read it you will see it easily. If you aren’t ready for all that then you still can apply the basic framework I laid out.
Anything to get the mind awake is worth your every attempt.
