Mass media, social networking, living in a virtual “world” have all contributed to, not just a political ignorance, but a communal ignorance as well. In other words, we, by and large, don’t know how to develop a sense of ourselves, let alone the world, in a communal way.
Everything here rings true save for this bit I quoted.
To my bones I feel your fervor. Corporate media has sunk lower than I had ever dreamed it would. Even with their millions they run the same footage, stories, and native advertising constantly. Infotainment takes up large parts of the “news”. It’s fucking depressing.
But this idea that humans will as a collective forget their humanity? No, we’re not there.
Political ignorance starts in the classrooms from k-12. Tell me the last time you got involved in a “third” party, or even voted “third” party?
Tell me the last time you attended any community meeting? They all still happen.
Communal ignorance is not our issue. People want very much to be in loving, compassionate environments. We know it so well all you need do is witness where the internet has been able to help people find each other. The transgender community is much closer, and better because of the internet. We use it as a tool to make community. We also use it to organize.
Occupy could have never happened without the internet. There was so much sharing of info not just within the US, but globally. It is part of the reason we had Bernie Sanders make a huge splash. Where some of your points become important is when you consider the millionth time the media reported Sanders would endorse Clinton. I’m still not sure it’s going to happen, but it’s all over the internet that it will tomorrow. Every media outlet was acting as if it was immanent since May. All the while if you were getting texts, or emails from the Sanders campaign they were saying no such thing.
This world is broken. Can it be healed? Yes! Greg McCain, I am a human who is involved in this world. I am involved in yours even if it is through this box. Love is innate from birth, we get stomped on at some point and stop being free with it, and believe it will “run dry”. But that is not and will never be the truth. If you believe in change then you also believe that love is inevitable.
