“ …a gradual decline in moral behavior (which has been ongoing for at least 40 years now)”
I need to know what moral behaviour is.
That would be the first point in clarity. Because — dang — that is quite a large statement standing on absolutely nothing. You might call it hubris.
And don’t get me wrong, Joe Brewer, I love your thoughts and ideas. I’ve read some of your longer pieces, and enjoy your view of this world. It’s because I agree with your basic premises that I keep reading you.
BUT
See how big the but is?
Everything that I want to do with my own writing veers way far away from the style you are using.
Why?
Because it preaches to the choir, and does not convert.
I’m sure you do have some people that were leaning your way who are leaning more now, but I am interested in hardcore middle, and over the middle types. There is a population that can’t be converted, but what do we do to nudge those that can be moved?
I agree that morality is firmly in the hands of Dogmatists. Morality has been let go of by those that know morality only through their actions. Which is also how you know it is still a living, breathing piece of culture/society. Stating that morals have been declining with nary a smidge of explanation into what that statement is really about does absolutely nothing to convince me of anything more than you might be capable of political slight of hand as well.
I hope this is coming through with the conviction, and interest that I want it to. You have an audience that I don’t. People want to listen to you. I’m critiquing with the intent that you will consider the depth of your strategy. Your audience, who are they, do you want it to grow, how can you be most effective?
