Sapiosexualism is the new dating trend that won’t go away

If you have gone on any internet dating app lately you’ve probably noticed the term “sapiosexual” in people’s profile. Most people use this to mean they are highly attracted/turned on by intelligence.

Seems innocent enough, right?

But if you go on leftist Facebook groups making fun of people’s dating profiles, you’ll see that leftists in these groups almost universally agree that sapiosexualism is a Bad Thing and immediately outs you as not being Woke.

The origins of “sapiosexualism” as a concept date back to 1998 when Livejournal user “wolfieboy” coined the term to describe his sexual attraction.

In a 2002 post he writes: “I don’t care too much about the plumbing. I want an incisive, inquisitive, insightful, irreverent mind. I want someone for whom philosophical discussion is foreplay.”

In other words, wolfieboy seems to be a bi/pan person who loves philosophy. Which in itself seems fairly innocuous.

Why sapiosexualism is cringy

So why has sapiosexualism become the target of so much leftist backlash? In modern “woke” circles, identifying as a sapiosexual on dating profiles is almost certainly bound to induce cringing.
