Underground Shiva Temple at Hampi

A sneak peak!

A wide-angle view of the Prasanna Virupaksha Temple, Hampi

Prasanna Virupaksha a.k.a Underground Shiva Temple is one of the oldest temples in Hampi, Karnataka, IN.

The main structure of the temple is below the ground level making the interiors of the temple submerge in rainy season and with stagnant water throughout the year. The main reason behind building this temple below ground level is not known.

The temple is on close proximity to other monuments and can be accessed easily on your way to exploring them. It is approximately 4 KM from Hampi Bazaar (center of the town).

The best time to visit Hampi is definitely in the winter as it would turn out to be unbearably hot in the summer.
