Sandwiched between Antwerp and Brussels

Mechelen is a city in Flanders, Belgium that is situated right in between predominantly Dutch-speaking Antwerp and French-speaking Brussels. It is a city of 82,500 and though it mostly gets overlooked for the two bigger cities that sandwich it, it is actually one of the cities in Belgium with a prominent historical center that has some interesting sights.

As the city is quite compact, most things are in walking distance. Things center around the Grote Markt (market square) and the cathedral (Sint-Romboutskathedraal). The cathedral was never properly finished as money ran out, but is an impressive church with baroque features nevertheless. Other architectural sights include another 7 churches, merchant’s houses that line the shopping streets and the narrow streets around the béguinages (or begijnhof in Dutch).
