The Entry Arch of the Little Island Pier 55 — NYC.

What is Little Island and How can you reach there?

Little Island is the contemporary landscape created on the bank of River Hudson in the west of Manhattan, New York City. It is an artificial Island created by Thomas Heatherwick at Pier 55. The main design concept for building this Island was to create a floating Leaf structure over water. Highly inspired by a Tulip flower shape, which is represented by the columns standing on the water.

You can easily commute to the Island through different mediums of transport. It almost takes half an hour train ride from World Trade Central Station. Depending upon your transport choice and distance you can also reach by bike ride, car, or taxi. The Entry is free of cost and open to the public, the only thing one needs to keep in mind the the opening and closing time which differs from time to time.

My Experience

It was top of my things-to-do list when in NYC and I started Little Island as my first site of exploration. I reached the island on a bright sunny day which offered me a bit of a relaxing place the island, was filled with a number of plant species giving a perfect cool for the visitors. The Island walkthrough is well-designed to bring the visitors to different levels giving beautiful views from all four sides of the island. There is an amphitheater on its upper side and on its lower side is the view towards the skyline of the New York City highrise. There is an open square that can be overlooked from all high points which offers a seating area and a canteen to enjoy a cup of coffee. Moreover, If you are interested in learning about different combinations of species of plants it is best done here which allows the esthetical view along with the practicality of the Public open space.

To me, it was a significant spot to visit when in NYC as it offers a great visit to a contemporary idea of landscape architecture and green space in the middle of a concrete jungle. From the Island, you can also go to “Chelsea Market” which is nearby, and also walk over the Highline whose entry is right next to the market. All in all, in this area you will end up covering three landmarks of the city.
