The Nemo Science Museum, Amsterdam

The famous capital city of the Netherlands — Amsterdam is known all around the world for many things that are exciting for all age groups. Starting from its 17th-century Golden Age to its artistic approach to town planning. Beautiful old towns with canals and great museums attract tourists from all around the world. Not just this attraction, the city also offers you recreational activities which are normally banned in most countries which makes it a little bit unique in the world. Having said that city has a lot more to offer in the field of science and sustainability, which is often overshadowed by exploring RED Light Street and smoking.

From its historic central station avenue, you can reach almost more than 15 world attractions out of which Nemo Science Museum is often underrated and just viewed from a boat ride tour as a Slant giant roof. Let me assure you it has more things to offer. The Nemo Science Museum is approximately about 1.1 km from the central station and 15 min walk. It is designed by famous architect Renzo Piano in the year 1997.

Google map indicates the distance of the museum from the central station.

The Nemo Science Museum offers you to learn science in a fun way and if you have missed your science class or are just curious as a kid to know science this is heaven for you. It is meant for all age groups as it is wisely said it is never too late until you start. Having said that museum is very interactive in a way where you can touch all its displays unlike normal museum protocol where you are prohibited to touch anything makes it stand out from other museums in Amsterdam. It has an easy and understandable way to explain your various science topics which includes fun games. Therefore, a visit to the Nemo science museum is one of the best things to do when in Amsterdam.

A short clip to logistic Robo at nemo sciecne Museume.

You can learn here exciting phenomena of science such as how lightning works, how do you make a vortex, magnetic power, how can you generate electricity through wind and water, architecture, and how to design a bridge, physics, and robotics are one of the most interesting things I found in the museum were the robots segregate the colorful balls. It has five floors and each floor displays different topics which include some notable exhibits as follows:

· Innovation Gallery: A range of iconic devices from historical technology.

· Construction: To learn the phenomena of building a gigantic structure such as a bridge.

· Science through our ages: Historical research over age-old fossils.

· Water Power: How to canalize water for energy and build a dam.

· Energize: Capturing energy from natural forces like light, wind, and water.

· Laboratory: Great Lab experience with lab coats and safety glasses.

· Life in the Universe: Voyage discovery.

· The Machine: Logistic expert with robots.

· World of space: Math that excites the basic day-to-day activities around you.

· Sensational Science: Light and sound.

· Humania: An exhibit about the human body and its functions.

· Energy Junkies: Addiction to energy

· Project tomorrow: Future world discoveries.

My Experience

Before visiting the museum, I visited it from outside several times, and finally, on my 4th visit to Amsterdam, I decided to explore the museum from inside out. On a sunny day in the summer of 2023, I bought the on-arrival ticket and started my science journey at Nemo. As you enter the campus of the museum you will pass by a bridge that takes you to the island of the museum which itself has a great view of the building. On the ground floor near the ticket counter, you can also find a souvenir shop where you can buy amazing small science goodies for your memories. You can get comfy by dropping your luggage in the locker which costs you around 1.50 Euro approx. On the first floor entrance, I scanned my ticket and was ready to enter the world of science. The first thing I encountered was the historic technological devices inventions for instance, I played around with the gigantic telephone followed by my small vortex and water bubble experiments. The other experiments that attracted me were logistics robots and water dams. Experience being in space was also a playful encounter. The most interesting out of all is the last floor, with a human body that dissected all the parts functions as well as human nature. How the shape and size of each part of our body has a purpose in our daily life activities and how in natural human behaviour and relationships. Once you are on the rooftop you can relax and buy some refinements which you can enjoy outside the rooftop garden with an exotic view of the city at its harbour.

All in all, a day at Nemo Science Museum would be worth spending when in Amsterdam. This a small reminder to a minimum of 4 hours to enjoy the entire exhibit along with snack breaks.
