Every tourist who plan to travel to Russia and wants to visit Saint Petersburg, should not forget to visit Kazan Cathedral. In the heart of Saint Petersburg on the famous Nevsky Street, an orthodox church is grandstanding. A magnificent building with an admirable architecture that travels to Saint Petersburg without visiting it is worthless. One of the most important historical, political and architectural monuments of Saint Petersburg, because all of its elements and constructors including architects, workers, and all the materials used, are all supplied from Russia.

Kazan Cathedral is an Orthodox Cathedral and located on the Nevsky Street. The cathedral is known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan and Kazanskiy Kafedralniy Sobor . Cathedral of Kazan is considered one of the most magnificent treasures of the country, with its unique, precise and incredibly beautiful interior and exterior. The church consists of a metal dome with layers of tin and decorated columns. Kazan Cathedral, inspired by the Church of Saint Peter Vatican (Rome), is one of the most important attractions of Saint Petersburg. The Kazan Cathedral was built between 1801 and 1811. The building was designed by Andrey Voronikhin to be replaced with a very old and small church. After making the church, the church became a place to keep a copy of Lady Kazan’s portrait. Emperor Paul I wanted the Kazan Cathedral to be similar to Saint Peter Church. He dreamed that one day Saint Petersburg became similar to Rome; a powerful religious center with the Kazan Cathedral in the center. The magnificence of this church is a symbol of the greatness of Saint Petersburg.

When the Napoleon army invaded Russia in 1812, the Russian army commander Mikhail Kutuzov, asked Lady Kazan for help, after that Kazan became a valuable place to commemorate Russia’s victory over Napoleon. Russia’s revolution in 1917 and the formation of the Soviet Union reduced the value of the churches and religious buildings of Russia. The Kazan Cathedral was closed in 1932 and later used as the Museum of Atheism. Eventually, Kazan was forgotten, and its religious treasures went into oblivion. After the collapse of communism and the re-admission of religion, many Russian churches were rebuilt. The exterior and interior of the Kazan Cathedral were restored between 1950 and 1968. Portrait of Lady Kazan was returned to the church in 2002. Our Russia travel agency members help you to find more about these historical events.
