Giving Thanks

It’s Thanksgiving in Canada

Our thanksgiving is different than the Americans. It’s actually tomorrow. Right now I’m thinking of all the things I am thankful for, the sources of gratitude in my life.

I am thankful to my mother for bringing me into the world and giving me my love of books.

I am thankful to my father for choosing me. We don’t share DNA, but he is my father and always will be. He picked the role when he was probably too young to make that choice and stuck with it. Love you Papa Olo.

I am thankful to my son, for so very many reasons. He is my favourite person in the world and a man who I am proud of.

I am thankful to the girl. The one, the only… my love and my light. I am thankful to her for not giving up, for sticking with me despite the troubles we’ve had. She is beautiful.

I am thankful to her daughter, her spark and light add to my life, and I am thankful for the opportunity to add to her life. Turns out I kind of like this parenting thing and I’m enjoying doing the (admittedly limited) amount of it I am doing these days.

I am thankful to the world for all of the opportunities it keeps providing me with. No, I’m not suddenly a member of the secret or some other bizarre cult that believes the world is specifically looking out for me, but the opportunities are there and I love that they are.

I am thankful to my brother, we’ve only met a couple of times but I am glad he is in my life.

I am thankful to my friends. I know I can be a weird, distant, isolated person sometimes. I know I vanish for long periods of time. For those who have stayed in my life despite that, I have huge amounts of gratitude.

I am thankful to the people who clap for my articles. You put a tiny bit of money in my pocket. Last month it saved me from embarrassment and a huge bounce fee. More than that, you let me know that somebody is reading my stuff.

I am thankful to the people who download and read my books. It’s very gratifying to know that people are reading the things I put so much energy into.

So, not my usual post — but something I should do more often, at least inside myself. Reflecting on the good in your life is the best way to keep your mindframe in a positive place. Being in a positive place is the best way to motivate yourself.
