Netflix and Record Releases

Netflix is killing it! They have us all hooked and begging for more. And they are giving us more. and more. and more.

If you don’t like the latest show, who cares? Just wait 2 weeks and you will have another.

I’m now hooked on their crime documentaries and as soon as I watch one, there is another one locked and loaded.

That’s how the entertainment business works in 2017. It is almost impossible to grab any attention from one record. Even the biggest artists are forgotten in 2 weeks. You can’t market things people just don’t want. Used to be this big explosion of media and PR coverage, grabbing as many fans on the front end, selling as many records as you possibly could in a short amount of time.

Now you may discover an artist after their record has been out a year. or two. or 10. It’s a compounding effect, not an explosion.

That’s why, if you are in the music business, I implore you to start thinking about how Netflix releases.

One after the other. consistently. And without pomp and circumstance. Just release it, announce it, and keep going! If it’s bad, your fans will forgive you if they know you will have something else out soon.

Let’s not have this romantic vision of how we release. For if you think about it, that’s not what we are selling after all is it?
