“Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, And say my glory was I had such Friends” — William Butler Yeats

What is it we’re looking for when we turn on the TV? To be turned on ourselves? To Decompress? To be endlessly entertained? Arguably, what’s really driving us to push all those buttons is the very human yearning for some curious sense of companionship. Sure, the friendship that TV provides can be very artificial in nature, but Friends made it strangely comforting all the same. Thanks to some wonderful writing, vivid acting and creative production, the story of these six lovely — albeit fictional — individuals has somehow become our own story. Through its highs and lows, through the fame and fortune, this show with it’s friendly name kept the faith with it’s audience. It made us smile. It made us laugh at ourselves. It made us care about some other people, even if they only existed in our hearts and minds. And if we occasionally got frustrated with them — hey I believe that happens with real friends too. Through it all they were, true to their words, there for us

Not only did this show leave us with everlasting memories, it also gave us some really amazing songs that we heard for the first time on the show. Here is our list of the seven amazing songs that F.R.I.E.N.D.S gave us:

7. Love Machine by The Miracles

Episode — TOW Paul’s the Man (Season 6 Episode 22)

“I’m Just a Love Machine! Huaaahhh!!” Remember Bruce Willis saying this before catching Ross with his daughter in his farmhouse? Those are the lyrics to Love Machine by The Miracles that was also on #1 position of the Billboards in 1975. Now it has two credits to its name!

6. Wicked Game by Chris Isaak

Episode — TOW Ross and Rachel…You Know (Season 2 Episode 15)

This song is played in the background when Ross and Rachel finally end up sleeping together in the planetarium and wake up to a bunch of school kids gawking at them the next morning.

5. Angel of the Morning — Chrissie Hynde

Episode — TOW The Baby on the Bus (Season 2 Episode 6)

This song is sung by Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders who plays as a paid artist at Central Perk in place of Phoebe who used to play for free. Evidently, Phoebe is not happy about this.

Here’s the version of the song that Chrissie sings on the show:

4. Tainted Love by Soft Cell

Episode — TOW the stripper cries (Season 10 Episode 11)

Remember Phoebe’s bachelorette party where the tiny old stripper (who Monica and Rachel all at the last minute) cries? Well, he dances to this song before the waterworks begin. Ironically, the name of the song fits the scene.

3. Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot

Episode — TOW Ross’s Inappropriate song (Season 9 Episode 7)

This song needs no introduction, but for those with extremely poor memory, this is the song that Ross and Rachel sing to Emma to make her laugh. Worst parents in the World?

2. I’ll be there for you by The Rembrandts

Episode — All

Ah! The song that brought it all together. Whenever it plays on TV or on the radio, we all are taken back to the days when we watched the gang hang out at Central Perk. It truly is the perfect song for the perfect show.

The #1 Song on our list is not one that was played by a professional musician or an artist. Rather, it’s a song that the writers of the show came up with for one of the characters, which she made hers. Couldn’t get it still? Scroll down for the answer.

  1. Smelly Cat — Phoebe Buffay

Who can forget the various versions of smelly cat sung by Phoebe? There was the version when she caught a cold, the one when she was singing with Chrissie Hynde and also the one which she recorded for a professional studio(that was eventually sung by someone else). This song has become an undetachable part of Phoebe’s persona and her anthem in many ways.

Which song do you like best? Let us know in the comments below. Know anyone who loves F.R.I.E.N.D.S as much as you do? Spread the love by sharing this with them :)
