Climbing up to the shoulders of Giants

Getting to base camp

The ideas has been brewing in my head for years. I’ve been playing around the idea of project based learning without understanding the full concept or ideas. I’ve in a sense been playing backyard footy on my own, making up the rules, see what works reinventing the already invented. But now want to join the big league, play not just well but great, reflect and improve practice. Time to stand on the shoulders of giants – Thank Issack

The real inspiration was when I saw a prevention buy the Lee and Bianca Hewes at our local Northgate conference. Too very passionate pedagogues. They inspired me to dig digger and think about what is possible.

In first term, my first with year 6 and back on stage 3 after a break on the earlier stages. We had been creating our own video production of a study of Wonder by RJ Palecio and the wonderful ABC series Little Lunch, focusing on how different points of view and give you different perspectives of an event.

This was OK. Students enjoyed the process and the outcomes achieved. But on reflection I felt it was missing a few organisation points.

  • Students struggled working in teams
  • Time line was ok, when implemented focused the students on the deadlines
  • More focus on the driving question

I can see now how much better it could have been with a few tweeks from the BIE gold standard PBL.

I can see base camp ahead, the Australian PBL Facebook group flag is flying high. Time to pitch my tent, acclimatise, then push on to camp 1.
