The fear of public speaking
They say most people fear public speaking more than they fear death. Seriously, getting up in front of a room full of people, most people would rather die, now that is fear.
I remember having that fear, growing up I was shy, yes, me hard to believe right? But I was and in college I challenged myself to take a public speaking course. Hello! What was I thinking? That was horrible, the first time I had to present I couldn't sleep the night before, I remember thinking don't do anything stupid like puke on yourself, or pee in your pants. Seriously, I was that nervous, I could hardly walk to the podem.
I was shaking so bad, my hands were sweating, I couldn't remember my name let alone my speech.
It was God awful and I remember thinking I never want to do this again!
Unfortunately I had a whole semester to keep feeling this way as I couldn't drop the class.
So you may think so how did you get from there to actually pursuing a career in public speaking? It was a long, hard road and the many times I've spoken in public since have been just as hard. I will tell you, the more you do the easier it gets but I still get nervous.
So since I want to do this and I have a message to share with the world, I decided the best way is to take classes with a professional. Just like athletes have coaches to make them better, we need coaches to make us better in our careers too.
I wanted to know what I was doing wrong, what I can do to captive the audience, what things could I approve upon or delete from my talks.
And yesterday I was invited to speak to a women's group about a subject I am a expert on...blogging and I still got nervous. The meat of the subject I knew but the new format I was taught to use was throwing me off and I was scared that I wasn't going to execute it right.
Here's the thing, the audience doesn't know if you were or weren't going to say this or that. Or if it was in the "right" order, it was all me and doing something new.
Look we all fear change, I stayed in a horrible marriage for 24 years because fear kept me stuck there. Fear is a dream killer, a life killer and it will keep you right where you are forever, if you let it.
I've learned more lessons about life these last 7 years than I've learned in my whole life. Why? Because I stepped out of my box, because I slapped my fear down and I walked out in faith.
Faith that you can change anything in your life if you want it bad enough.
My faith now overrules my fear and if I do screw up, or I do fall on my face, so what? It's not the end of the world, I will get up, laugh at myself and go again.
I'm never letting fear rule my life again, so no, for me I no longer fear public speaking, I've learned to over come my fear and I'm here to tell you that you too, can overcome any fear you have if you try.
So today my friends remember the only thing that is stopping you from your dreams is you! You are your own worst enemy and fear is your warden keeping you in your own prison. Step out of your box, let go of your fears, learn something new, challenge yourself to be better, trust me it's not as scary as death but what is scary is letting your dreams die because of your fear.
"Be the change you want to see"
"And just when the caterpillar thought his life over...he turned into a beautiful butterfly"
