What is bentonite clay?

Also called Montmorillonite clay, bentonite clay is made up of calcium, magnesium, sodium and other traces of a number of minerals. It is made from volcanic ash deposit that has settled on the earth.

The clay is named after Fort Benton, Wyoming, where the largest source of the clay can be found. It can, however, be found all over the world.
