We have many, many treatsurers among us who can brilliantly turn surplus ingredients into lovely dishes! This Sat 7 Nov at 11am on @treatsure’s Instagram page, we’re doing an Instagram Live cook-cum-chat session with our talented treatsurer @adelelau (IG: @seasonwithtime).
Since our latest new app update a couple of months back, we have onboarded several leading sustainability lifestyle partners on treatsure to encourage our community to move towards zero-waste lifestyle alternatives! This may include household items to extend their food shelf life, items repurposed from food or even simply useful essential products that will help in your zero-waste kitchen and living.
One of these early partners we’re really happy to collaborate with is Bamboo Straw Girl (BSG), founded by sustainability advocate Melissa Lam. We speak to her to find out more about BSG and what she’s been up to lately!
We just celebrated National Day this month and what better way to commemorate the Singapore spirit than to showcase some of our local initiatives and inventions!
Here are three cool local startups which have successfully converted food waste into something of greater value for Singapore and Singaporeans.

While her accountancy mates in polytechnic were busy doing up balance sheets on paper, 17-year-old Joline Tang was counting a different sum. She was concerned after seeing her classmates use only one side of their paper, and would collect their unused sheets to reduce waste.
“I would bring them back home, and I even introduced a recycling system in my family!” she recalled with amusement.
With an interest in the environment, Joline initially wanted to further her studies in environmental science after graduation but ended up enrolling in Accountancy at Singapore Management University instead.

Realised it’s been a year since we embarked on our collaboration with UglyFood! That was when treatsure first expanded into the B2C surplus grocery space, and like many other cool ideas and solutions we’ve been working on, this was an experiment outside our hotels and F&B core! But we’re so glad that one year on, we have continued to see strong interest from our treatsurers and new users to save the fruits, veg and mushrooms with us.
First things first, though UglyFood is called UglyFood, not all the fruits or vegetables they list on our app is…

Some identify the Singapore River as the beginnings of our nation’s business and trade activity. To treatsure, the River holds great significance to our beginnings too as it is the backdrop of one of our pioneer buffet-in-a-box partners, Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay.
Recently, local media reported that the hotel, together with Liang Court which it is adjoined with, will be redeveloped and walk into history sometime in the second quarter this year. We are certain the Hotel’s buffet restaurant The Square will be fondly missed by our team and many regular treatsurers.

“I didn’t want to be a chef, I wanted to be a pilot.”
This was Chef James Francis’ candid response when we asked him if it was his childhood ambition to join the culinary scene and become a chef.
Born in Malaysia, Chef James had from a young age dreamt of becoming an air force pilot. Unfortunately, he failed the colour test and got offered to be a commando instead but it was not his calling.
“My dad cooked great meals at home and that impacted me a lot and I realised I could make a career out of this…
When Juliana was a teenager, the glitz of the hospitality industry caught her eye.
“I wanted to learn how the hospitality industry operated and be a part of this glamourous industry,” she recounted. Fuelled by this genuine interest, she enrolled in a course at SHATEC, the local hospitality and tourism institute.
Little did she know it was the beginning of something bigger.
A renowned 5-star hospitality group recruited Juliana and sponsored her to be their intern for the next 3.5 years. She was rotated around different departments, having to pick up the ropes across various hotel functions. …
