NFL rule changes which make it impossible for defenses to cover WR’s has more to do with the death of the running back than anything else. Teams have also realized that an elite offensive line can create running lanes that just about any RB with 4.4 speed can run through (see: DeMarco Murray). Why pay a RB $10 million of your cap, when you can invest that money in a premiere offensive lineman (who also protects the QB), and then sign someone like Alfred Morris for a mere $800K?
