You need to add a third dimension to the matrix to account for whether or not the blowout/result was expected. There’s nothing fun about a blowout everyone knew would be a blowout, but when it’s unexpected it’s that much better, especially if it’s the underdog pulling it off.

The aforementioned Germany-Brazil match is a good example of an unexpected, is-this-really-happening blowout. And I can’t tell you how deliriously happy yet stunned I was when Juan Uribe polished off that six-run inning that included chasing Cliff Lee with a three-run HR to put the Giants up 8–2 in game one of the 2010 World Series. Maybe that’s not exactly a blowout, but it felt like it.
