The Best Lyrics of 2017 (So Far)

The best songs of the year just didn’t seem fair, so I changed it up a bit.

About a week ago, a friend asked me to write about my top songs of the year, after reading my recent piece on my favorite albums of 2017.

So I thought… and I thought… and I thought some more. I wrote songs down. I erased them. I wrote others.

Finally, I came to the conclusion that it just didn’t seem fair to give a list of 10 songs. There are just too many incredible individual songs to mention. So with that said, I’ve decided I will give my favorite lyrics of the year instead.

So here they are, in no particular order.

Coffee and Cigarettes — Vic Mensa

“Women are like a greatest hits album, they get the best of me”

If We Were Vampires — Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

“If we were vampires and death was a joke
We’d go out on the sidewalk and smoke
Laugh at all the lovers and their plans
I wouldn’t feel the need to hold your hand”

Same Logic/Teeth — Brand New

“I don’t need to know where you come from
If you don’t know where you belong”

Drinkin’ Problem — Midland

“People say I got a drinkin’ problem
That ain’t no reason to stop
People saying that I’ve hit rock bottom
Just cause I’m living on the rocks
It’s a broken hearted thinkin’ problem
So pull another bottle off the wall
People say I got a drinkin’ problem
But I got no problem drinkin’ at all”

Party People — Vince Staples

“Move your body if you came here to party
If not then pardon me
How I’m supposed to have a good time
When death and destruction’s all I see?
Out of sight, I’m out of my mind
The sound of sunshine is callin’ me”

The Heart Part 4 — Kendrick Lamar

“My spot is solidified if you ask me (What else?)
My name is identified as “That King”
I’ll let y’all worry about a list, I’m on some other sh*t
A difference between accomplishments and astonishments”

Perfect — Ed Sheeran

“Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own”

The Parts — Manchester Orchestra

“Give it thirteen years
Both your legs up, you’re crying
Trying to push a life out from your belly
I’m a water boy, overwhelmed by the screaming
Your clenched teeth, nails dug deep into my meaning
I still want to know each part
Want to know each part of you”

Best Part — Daniel Caesar

“You’re my water when I’m stuck in the desert
You’re the Tylenol I take when my head hurts
You’re the sunshine on my life”

Despacito — Luis Fonsi

(Use Google Translate, if you can’t read it. It’s incredibly poetic.)

“Quiero desnudarte a besos despacito
Firmo en las paredes de tu laberinto
Y hacer de tu cuerpo todo un manuscrito”

Nothing’ll — Smidley

“Pray to be sour paper on your tongue
Pray to be swallowed
Pray that something will keep us on
But nothing will
Keep us together”

FEEL. — Kendrick Lamar

“I feel like this gotta be the feelin’ what ‘Pac was
The feelin’ of an apocalypse happenin’
But nothin’ is awkward, the feelin’ won’t prosper
The feelin’ is toxic, I feel like I’m boxin’ demons
Monsters, false prophets schemin’
Sponsors, industry promises”
One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
