Bionicle Heroes

After playing Monster Rancher I decided to look for another Gameboy advance game. This next one was as the title says Bionicle Heroes. I haven’t completed the whole game, but I’ve played long enough that I think it’s time I share some opinions about the game.

Bionicle Heroes is a top-down shooter game where you control a hero Bionicle through multiple different areas, and battle hordes of enemies and bosses. While playing the game aims where the player is facing this can make aiming a bit difficult since you’re both moving and aiming at the same time. Of course, at the time this game came out you had no dual analog sticks to aim and move, so games had to improvise ways to make aiming and moving a thing the player can do. Though aiming can be difficult the player can do a hit and run strategy. The game makes it where enemies and the player can’t attack what’s off screen. So, having a couple enemies on screen at a time can help the player manage hordes better.

At the beginning of the game enemies are really easy to kill with just one shot doing the job. However, as time goes on the enemies gain more health, and hit the player harder, so the game really tests you at later levels. At the end of each area in the game you’re Bionicle puts on a mask changing your ability. At the very start your B button ability acts like a shotgun blast that spreads a few projectiles in front of the player. After the first area you get a similar shotgun blast that shoots fire instead of regular projectiles. Eventually you get a laser beam ability, a bomb throwing ability and so much more to deal with the annoying hordes.

The game being Lego themed due to Bionicle does have Lego elements to it where you build bases, platforms, turrets and other things to help you progress through the game. There are also Lego blocks you can destroy around the map to give yourself mor points and health. Sometimes enemies hide in these destructible blocks so be careful. Make sure you gain as many points as possible. After ever level you gain a rank based on how many points you have. Points also act as lives where after every death you lose a few points to be able to respawn. I never died with 0 points so I don’t know if that results in a game over. I do know that if you’re someone who dosen’t care about ranks then you don’t have to stress too much on dying. However, if you’re a perfectionist this game is really going to test you. The levels get longer as the enemies get tougher so really playing safe is the best bet if you want that high rank.

Overall, the game is action packed, fun and challenges you the further you get like all games should. Game can feel unfair later on but once you get the hang of how to handle combat things get a easier and more fun. Recommend for anyone with access to Gameboy games and if you have kids since this is Lego themed. 7/10
