Diversity in Tech and what we’ve already lost

Hi Nicole, this is a really great story. Sorry for your loss, but thank you for telling the story behind the loss. One thing I would add is that the issue you highlight is affecting people of all colors, backgrounds and ages. It’s not just a brown or black problem. It’s a human problem. Much has been written (including by me) about gender and ethnicity bias, but that’s not the whole story. There are a multitude of other biases related to age, whether someone has a degree, the perceived “eliteness” of college where they got that degree, the name recognition of their previous employers, etc. Some of these biases relate to protected classes, while others do not. All of them impact hiring decisions. I wholeheartedly believe that if we really want to solve the problem you articulate, we need to begin by changing our hiring processes to strip out all the things that could create those biases and instead focus on talent and ability. Until we do that, everything else is just a bandaid.
