You Have to Do it

You can be anywhere, doing anything

Last year, when I first came across all these new awesome tools and concepts for higher education, I was really excited.

One of the first sort of mantras that I started to live by and use quite frequently was “you can literally be anywhere in the world, doing anything you want, and at the same time be getting a world class education”.

Yesterday was the start of the first adventure to truly test this theory.

One of the SOLEmates I live with out in Black Mountain was supposed to be on a plane to Portland two days ago. Right as he was leaving he got word that his plane was cancelled.

Instead of just rescheduling, he offered up the idea of taking a road trip.

Now, this Saturday(February 15th) I am going to be speaking at a TEDx Event at the University of North Carolina Asheville.

So when I heard this, I had no intentions of taking part in that trip and thought that it may just be more of a fun idea than anything.

Then, two of my friends from Michigan that are down here at the SOLE as well heard road trip and west coast, it was a done deal for them.

Now a road trip across the country is something that I have always wanted to do, but every time the conversation had come up before it was this or that or the other that had kept me from actually taking action and making it happen.

So my three fellow SOLEmates were pretty damn excited to get this show on the road, and I was a bit unsure if this was really going to be able to work for me.

Then I realized something, I realized that if I didn’t go on this road trip than I was being a hypocrite. I was saying that you can do what you want, when you want, no matter what; and if I decided that I was “too busy” or “couldn’t get work done on the road”, then the very basis to what I have been working on for the last 6+ months.

Is it going to be a close call? Maybe.

Is there a possibility for something to take a crazy turn of events? Yeah.

Will my buddies 89 Grand Prix make it? Let’s hope so.

So far, this has already been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

We decided to take the scenic route and are currently in San Fransisco at a Court Yard Marriott.

I have been communicating with David Blake at Degreed.com for the past few months via email and phone, and now will be meeting him in person over coffee.

I can stay on top of my classes and all of the projects that I am working on because I have an internet connection.

I’ve been able to clear my mind and focus on my upcoming talk in front of 400+ people with no distractions.

On top of all of this I am getting a chance to travel across the country and knock that off my bucket list at the ripe age of 20.

The thing is that this proves that you can literally be anywhere doing anything you want. But the only way to make that work is when you are presented with opportunities, that you take them.

Even if it seems like it may be far fetched, you seriously need reflect and ask yourself, “is this something that I want?” If the answer is yes then do it.

And know that everything will work out exactly how it is supposed to and enjoy the ride.

Bottom line is that if you want something, you have to do it. You have to take advantage of each and every opportunity that calls to you. There is no reason that you can’t do everything you want to day in and day out. You are in control and if you want it make it happen.
