The Spotlight Initiative
to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls
The spotlight initiative is a global, multi-year initiative aimed at getting rid of all types of violence against women and girls (VAWG). The initiative is in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Violence against women and girls is one of the major impediments to the achievement of the human rights of the female gender and the initiative is aimed at tackling all forms of violence but with special emphasis to domestic violence, sexual and gender-based violence, human trafficking, sexual and economic labour exploitation and femicide.
The Spotlight Initiative carried out a series of workshops in Nigeria, which was implemented in a total of 6 states namely; Abuja, Lagos, Cross-river, Sokoto, Adamawa and Ebonyi. The Initiative which fully integrates the principle of “leaving no one behind” is working towards a Nigeria where all women and girls live a life free from violence. The UN Development Programme in Nigeria in collaboration with UN Women Nigeria, United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), UNICEF Nigeria and UNESCO Regional Office Abuja worked on this initiative with the European Union in Nigeria and Government and Civil Society partners.
The workshop was aimed at sharing information on various factors (cultural, political, socioeconomic) that contribute to violence against women and girls and the preventive methods in addressing the root cause to ensure access to timely and quality service for victims and survivors.
Bridgepoint in collaboration with Triangle Africa was a part of the Spotlight Initiative workshop in Nigeria and handled a session on Interest Discovery with Ibukun Olusola, the Innovation Strategist at Triangle Africa as the speaker. The session was aimed at helping victims and survivors of Gender-Based Violence get back on track by discovering their interests and choosing either education, business or career paths they would like to embark on. The process and explained framework can help transform a vulnerable victim to an innovative and powerful survivor.
To proffer an easy and effective solution to the problems individuals are facing in discovering what path best suits them, Triangle Africa is building an assessment system and a learning system. The assessment system is an AI system using user-based response algorithm to assess learners’ interests and personality, and make recommendations of tailored learning curves and career paths and the learning system takes inferences from the Assessment System and recommends developmental content that ensures preparedness for the future of work.
Everyone willing deserves a chance to grow and Triangle Africa’s aim is to help as many youths in Africa discover themselves and grow. The spotlight initiative is helping us achieve that and we look forward to a future where everyone is healing, learning, building and growing.
