Nobody plays alone: we’re powering gaming communities

TriForce Tokens is creating an environment in which communities of gamers can be rewarded for enjoying the gaming experience. By making value portable between games, we’re helping both the major players and indie developers to attract and keep players. And we’re giving gamers more reasons to engage with the games they love and the other people around the world who play them.

Why? Because gaming just got social.

Everyone’s in:

More people than ever are playing games. Gaming has broken through traditional age/gender barriers into the mainstream, and it’s thanks to mobile:

  • On mobile, many games are free, and the rest are cheap enough to lower the barrier to participation
  • The device is effectively free: users buy/contract a mobile for their lifestyle, so there’s no further purchase decision to make
  • Many people first try games on their mobiles and then migrate their favourite game brands to desktop or console

With millions of new players breaking demographic boundaries, gaming has become a socialised pastime.

Everyone’s watching:

If you’re not playing, you can watch. SuperData Research found that E-Sports in Europe alone will be worth $346m in 2018. Twitch.tv, the gamer’s live streaming site now owned by Amazon is valued in the billions of dollars and remains the 44th most popular website on the planet.

E-Sports is making gaming profitable for the best players. For viewers it’s either fun or instructive (depending on your devotion to a game!). Either way, it is creating a new use of time in the gaming space, and attracting more people from more demographics than ever (League of Legends has broken the 100m player mark); all of whom belong to communities built around the shared experience of watching rather than playing.

Games themselves are social:

Thanks to our constant connectivity, games themselves are now more social than ever. On mobile, a good proportion of the casual gaming sector is devoted to multi-player games. And that’s before we account for the big MMORPGs and other multi-player console brands extending their reach to mobile.

We’re playing everywhere:

In a multi-screen world, we have more devices, screens and control surfaces at our disposal than ever.

According to Newzoo’s annual Gaming report (2016), revenues in 2018 are split almost perfectly three ways between mobile, console and PC (with mobile in the ascendant for 2019).

Again, more devices means more types of player with different use cases and ways of playing. It’s a huge opportunity to build new communities of interest around people who see gaming as social and collaborative.

The gaming industry has also woken up the value of community. The Gaming program at the hugely influential SXSW conference for 2018 even includes compassion in gaming as a key trend:

“Our current social landscape has gone too far, having taken a hold of many individual gamer’s lives in severely negative ways… The need for a shift in focus towards compassion, caring, and understanding for one another is all too clear… SXSW Gaming is determined to champion this vital cause so that future gamers have a much better environment to feel comfortable in.”

And around playing and watching will come a new wrapper: value. Newzoo’s report again:

“The success of card battle games and skin trading illustrates the desire of consumers to collect, create, show off, and ultimately earn money from doing so. This trend, led by Valve and Chinese game companies, will be visible as a new layer of interactivity and entertainment grows around an increasing number of games.”

In 2017, consumers can collect, create and show off. TriForce Tokens will let them earn money, but without creating the sort of one-sided relationship of YouTube’s celebrity ‘influencers’. Instead, ours is a community of communities in which everyone can earn, spend and play.
