We recently reported that certain airlines may charge different prices for the same flight when using different currencies or country settings. First we discovered this on Norwegian Airlines, which consistently charges the lowest price when purchasing the flight in Norwegian Kroner. Their most expensive currency is always US Dollar.

Then we started digging into this even further and found quite a handful of airlines that apply the same pricing. This seems to be a bit of a South American phenomenon. Though, we have only checked the major ones, most likely there are others out there that apply a similar pricing policy. Interestingly, for one Argentinean airline the cheapest currency is US Dollars rather than the Argentinean peso.

This is the list of airlines that apply different pricing between currencies and most likely there are a lot more out there:

  • Norwegian Airlines: Pick Norwegian Kroner
  • LAN Airlines: Pick Chilean pesos
  • Aerolíneas Argentinas: Pick US Dollars
  • Avianca: Pick Columbian pesos
  • TAM Linhas Aéreas: Pick Brazilian real

Psssst….You can also try this with online travel agencies. We have seen this a couple times in the past e.g. on Expedia

So how can you get these cheaper fares?

  1. Change your currency on the airline’s site if possible
  2. Change your country of residence on the airline’s site to the local one
  3. Use the incognito mode in your browser when switching between different currencies
  4. Use a VPN to get a domestic IP address for the respective currencies
  5. Clear your cookies before your searches or restart the browser in incognito mode
