Its closest neighbours are Western and Southern Europe, Anatolia, the Levant, and North Africa. It is the third-largest region in the Atlantic with a total area of roughly 2.510 million km2. The Mediterranean Ocean is a relatively recent addition, having split from the Atlantic Ocean about 6 million years ago, according to geological evidence. The Sea has been a crucial trade route since antiquity, and it has had a significant impact on the evolution of modern societies.

In this biogeographical region centred on (Greece, Malta, and Cyprus), seven European Union (EU) nations are found, either entirely (Tunisia) or in part (France, Portugal, Italy, and Spain). The predominantly hilly terrain, hot, dry summers, and damp, frigid winters are unique to the region. Numerous rare species that are found nowhere else on Earth are native to the Mediterranean region.

The best way to protect the Mediterranean region is for the appropriate Member States and important stakeholders to work together to establish natural conservation measures that are tailored to the region’s particular needs and created to address its particular problems.

The Natura 2000 list is updated or reduced every year to reflect sites of Community Importance for the Mediterranean Biogeographical Area.

Fun facts about the Mediterranean Sea

  • There are 22 Mediterranean countries. Given its enormous size, the Mediterranean is bordered by several countries. The remaining countries on the list are: Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro round out the list.
  • There are around 3,000 islands in the Mediterranean. The number of Mediterranean islands is disputed. The majority seems to agree on more than three thousand. 3,500 is what some estimates state.
  • The two biggest islands are owned by Italy. There are about 3,000 islands in the Mediterranean. Some are small, some are huge. The largest populations and largest amount of land are found on the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
  • The Mediterranean is made up of many smaller waters. Thus, the Mediterranean Sea is made up of various smaller seas. Among these seas, the most well-known are the Alboran Sea, Balearic Sea, Ligurian Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Ionian Sea, Adriatic Sea, Sea of Marmara, and Aegean Sea.

How deep is the Mediterranean Sea?

On the other side, the Mediterranean Sea is bordered by a total of 22 nations. Given that there are countless marine creatures and at least 3,000 islands. The Mediterranean Sea’s actual depth is a matter of conjecture. With a total area of 965,300 square miles, the Mediterranean Sea is greater than both the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea combined. The Mediterranean Sea (969,000 sq. mi) is a body of water with a width of approximately 2,509,000 square kilometers. It measures 3,900 kilometers (2,400 miles) from east to west and 1,600 kilometers (600 miles) at its widest point.

Why is the Mediterranean Sea Important?

Geopolitical peace is necessary since the stability of one Mediterranean coast depends on the safety of the other. In other words, southern Europeans feel safer along the coasts of Libya than they do on the beaches of Sicily. The ramifications of what occurs and who governs the North African shoreline are felt by the European nations on the other side of the waterway. The Mediterranean Sea’s depth has never been sufficient to guarantee safety. even in antiquity, when geography posed a much greater challenge to the exercise of authority than it does today. Compared to how far apart they were, they were closer. The connectivity between the Mediterranean coasts has only gotten better as technology has developed.

Length of Mediterranean Sea

The northern Mediterranean coast of Egypt stretches for over 500 kilometers. Throughout the summer, swarms of Egyptians visit this area for the sand beaches and blue waters. To handle the increase in visitors, several large resorts have sprouted up next to these crystal-clear waters in recent years. However, the majority of tourists head directly towards Alexandria, which was formerly a well-known port city. Despite being praised for its beauty over the years, this dilapidated old dame of a city is by far Egypt’s most memorable city. Due to its proximity to the sea, excellent seafood, ancient history, and deteriorating belle époque monuments, Alexandria has a radically different feel from Cairo.
