Stephen M. Tomic

Would you believe I’ve been mulling this one over for days? I hate conflict so much it makes me want to crawl under something. But, I definitely prefer to read more and decide if I’m offended myself. And this discussion is helping me mull over a book I suggested for the book club I run: Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami. I wonder if some of his stories ended up here, how much they might annoy and offend. As I read the book, I found myself moving between judging the characters, the author and then making peace with it — sort of. And I want to read it again! Maybe that’s part of literature. Maybe sometimes it pisses us off and makes us uncomfortable and leaves us wondering where we stand. And I still hope no one in my book club gets offended at me personally for my choice of the book when we meet this month…
