Helping people win… it’s the only way

What do people really care about when it comes to working for a company?… Is it the product…the pay? Maybe it’s because you have tapped into what they believe in. Before my Apple days, I worked for an organization that had a simple vision and mission and it caused me to move across the country with only 75$ in my bank account.

“Leading people towards life’s greatest goal, knowing Jesus.”

Today, I think about my personal mission for my recent startup WinDigital. I ask myself, “What valuable words can I give to people to tell them what I love doing.” I stumbled upon it by going back to my high school roots, playing basketball.

The rise and immediate fall…

I was playing point guard as a sophomore and in some areas of my game, I had promise to be a good player (It was not in the height category) . Coach was giving me the responsibility to handle the rock and run the plays. I WAS STOKED!!!

Our first game of the season I came out with oozing with confidence, thinking only about my personal goals. I had to be the lead scorer…I had to win the game… I had to take the last shot. I had no concerns about my team mates or my coaches game plan.

Long story short, I ate a ton of humble pie that day. I wasn’t the lead scorer, our team got creamed, our best player on the team was getting ready to beat me up in the locker room and I had the amazing stat of TWENTY TURNOVERS… that’s right… I had more turnovers than points, assists and rebounds. I was the ultimate leader in the loosing the ball category.

Embarrassed, but sober about the experience, my coach came up to me later in the week and said.

“I know you want to win, but scoring isn’t the only way…Scoring can only make one person happy, but an assist can make two people happy.”

My credo was born

From that moment on, I knew my role and my vision for the season. Be the leader in assists…give up your personal value and give more to those around you.

Today I still carry that vision into everything I do. “Set people up to win.” I don’t need to be the one scoring all the points or what they say in business, “winning the deals.” I’m happy being the coach, the advisor, the person watching and analyzing the game and helping people win.

Cause when you win, I win

That’s what WinDigital is all about… being the point guard, the Jason Williams, the Bobby Hurly or the Chris Paul. I want to create the play… I want you to thow down the “alley oop.”

Cause at the end of the play we both are pointing at each other and saying great play.
