Crickets in the City

You’ll hear them
Not in the middle
of the night,
But a few hours
before sunrise.

They sing
for the lonely,
for the restless,
for the dreamers,
for every quiet listener.

Of forgotten hopes,
unspoken phrases,
repressed fears.
They sing the songs
of broken homes.

They replace the buzz
of city traffic
to drown the sobs of
the emptiest man.
