Hi Brad — Thank you for your response! So I just finished a university class this spring. I decided to do a reading endorsement this spring, and the first class I took was almost entirely irrelevant to my practice. I teach high school, but the instructor is a kindergarten teacher; of course, all of the course materials were focused on early elementary. It’s not a surprise, I suppose, but the great irony of the course was that it was focused solely on buidling a culturally relevant classroom, but the instructor, in building a university class, did not take the time to create a culturally relevant curricula for her college students. (You can imagine what my instructor evaluation looked like)
I don’t understand why it’s okay for university professors to suck so badly. I did do all of the reading, however. Because I’m obviously a glutton for punishment, but also because even though the practical advice was useless, the theory underlying that advice was sound. So, like you, I spent a lot o time doing my own research and creating an experience that was useful and relevant to me.
And honestly, that stupid class did help me decide to change focus in my classroom. Obviously, what is relevant to one person isn’t relevant to another, and even though I know I do a much better job of teaching relevant skills and texts to my students than my university professors do, my demographic (and your future ones) are much harder to reach. This particular change in practice will make it much easier and enjoyable to teach — and of course, much more enjoyable for my students to learn.
