Everything is local in the age of glocality
Glocality is a wide ranging concept that will come to define the social transition through the third industrial revolution. Synthetically we can now be anywhere at any time. Physically we can be anywhere within a day for the price of a couple weeks labor. Synthetically we can learn about a variety of cultures and places and pick and choose which best suite our personal traits and characteristics. For myself I have always tried to distance my own identity from any physical space. For example I am not a “proud Australian”. Australia is just the place I live. I am proud of some Australians, not so proud of others. Just as I am proud of some Syrian’s or Canadian’s and not so proud of other. In a time where information about other places and cultures is so accessible and I find it difficult to elevate one culture above another. We are all so interconnected I feel as attached to someone from Peru as I do someone from Geelong. Both of my parents migrated to Australia at the age of 4. One from Croatia and one from the Greek and Macedonian border region. I hardly identify with either of these cultures but I always found myself liking my Croatian side more. Writing this for the first time I wondered why that was. I realized it is because red is my favorite color and it is in the Croatian flag. This is exactly why I try to attach myself to tangible cultures. For example sporting or music cultures where I have characteristic traits in common with others in the culture. Place is almost irrelevant. You make the best of what you have but understand that others are doing the same as well. I struggle to understand why it is someone cares more about the death of a person that lives 3 suburbs away from them more than a hundred deaths in another country. These days all news is local news.
