Are 10 year olds right about doing business in Indonesia?

What’s that? What do 10 year olds know about business? And in Indonesia?

Like me, you may have found that dealing with ChatGPT is like having a 10 year old adviser — very well informed and persuasive on some topics, but sometimes unable to separate fiction from reality especially when both use Tiktok as a data source or just completely make things up!

So I asked ChatGPT about doing business in Indonesia, a topic where I have a lot of experience and good road-tested judgement — neither of which ChatGPT has.

And I asked actual 10 year olds too to make a comparison.

It turns out they were both right, but express it differently.

Difficulties doing business in Indonesia according to…

10 years olds

  • Getting a visa and finding somewhere to stay
  • Hard to communicate
  • Following the rules

Chat GPT

  • Market Access
  • Communication barriers
  • Complex Regulatory Environment

So they’re basically the same on all points, which is proof of my long suspicion about ChatGPT — that it’s essentially a 10 year old!

And they’re right too, those are important issues when doing business in Indonesia.

ChatGPT captures it with wordy but good advice:

Understanding and respecting Indonesian cultural values, building relationships, learning the language, and adapting communication and negotiation styles can significantly contribute to successful business interactions for foreign individuals in Indonesia.
Seeking guidance from local contacts, consultants, or experienced professionals familiar with the Indonesian business culture can also provide valuable insights and support.

But the 10 year old sums it up best:

“Don’t go if you don’t know what to do!”
