Context

Design a task management application and develop interactive wireframes of its web and mobile components. Assume that target users are college students. Incorporate iOS design guidelines to the wireframes.

Design

My concept provides a multi-functional task manager that allows users to create todo lists and add or track tasks. Users can also set reminders for tasks, set repeating tasks, and check off completed tasks. Since my target users are college students, I think “Todo Lists” would be a useful application since it can make their busy schedules (including school, work, and personal) more manageable through trackable and actionable tasks.

Context

Use the Wizard of Oz technique to build and test a behavioral prototype for an application of a voice-operated assistant.

Design

I collaborated with three other students to implement the Wizard of Oz technique. We came up with an idea to use a voice-operated assistant for ordering grocery. Since we were not building an actual voice-operated assistant, we had to rely on our creativity to trick our usability test participant into believing that he is interacting with a functional prototype.

Behavioral Prototype Plan

Prototype

Our prototype consisted of two components: a bluetooth speaker and a breadboard. Although a microphone is connected to the breadboard, the…

Context

Create a video that comprehensively and concisely communicates the motivation, usage, and functionality of a health and/or fitness product or service. Explain to a potential customer why and how he or she would use this product or service.

Design

I selected a mobile app called Relax Melodies for the video prototype. Relax Melodies offers a wide selection of sounds and melodies that users can combine to create their own mixes and fall asleep to. The goal of the app is to help users regain control of their sleep.

Design Challenge

Develop your ability to create 3D models for prototyping physical objects at medium fidelity by designing something that would be useful in your everyday life.

The design must use all three of the following primitive operations:

  • Extrusion
  • Revolution
  • Boolean

Design

Originally, I planned to design a spice rack for my growing collection of spices but this would require a large amount of material to 3D print. Since this was my first time 3D modeling and printing, I wanted to create something simple and less time-consuming. …

iPhone X Stand

Design Challenge

Design and build a cellphone stand that can be used in your prototyping work. This phone stand should assist you in shooting videos of objects below it, such as paper prototypes.

Design

When I filmed the usability tests for my previous prototyping projects, I had a difficult time keeping my hand steady. I needed something to support my phone and help me record at different heights and angles. Thus, I was thrilled to embark on this design challenge.

The requirements and constraints of this project include:

  • Limiting the cutting material to a single sheet of 18" x 24" chipboard
  • Creating a…

Scenario

The OXO brand is known for applying universal design to deliver well-designed, comfortable and easy to use tools for cooking and food preparation. They are exploring opportunities to expand their business into new areas that start to incorporate sensors and digital UIs for precision results (think Good Grips meets modernist cuisine tools), as well as expanding into new types of product lines. Prototype and evaluate the design for a shower control interface for a high-end, multi-feature valve and temperature control.

Design

OXO is a manufacturer of kitchen and home products built on the principles of universal design. The company seeks to…

Scenario

You are working at a design strategy consultancy and you have been asked by management to come up with some new concepts for wearable tech products. Your team is given the challenge of a system that combines a smart watch and a smart phone, and asked to develop a product concept that involves synchronization of data between the two smart devices.

Design

Recipe apps like Yummly provide users with access to thousands of recipes on their mobile devices. These apps provide an ingredient list and step-by-step instructions for each recipe so that beginners can recreate the dish at home. …

Prototyping is a powerful way to explore and test ideas quickly without requiring too much time or resources. Over the next few weeks, I will be exploring a wide variety of prototyping techniques for different kinds of user experience design problems and platforms.

Each week, I will be sharing my design and thought process on the following prototyping topics and techniques:

  • Low fidelity 2D (paper prototyping)
  • Low fidelity 3D (model prototyping)
  • Medium fidelity 2.5D (laser cutting)
  • Medium fidelity 3D (3D modeling & printing)
  • Linear narrative 4D (video prototyping)
  • Interactive 5D — behavioral (“Wizard of Oz”)
  • Interactive 5D — web/mobile (wireframes & mockups)
