This phantom is often identified as the astral body. It appears to be virtually identical to the physical body, but is made of less gross material. I can’t speak to the veracity of this view. I have experienced lucid dreaming and the concept that we are comprised of varying degrees of finer and grosser substances rings true. Of late I am becoming more and more certain that singular consciousness is an illusion. In other words, we may think we’re an I, but we are really a We. In fact, it seems as though we move between different identities with the speed of a sparrow. In rudimentary terms think of driving a car and then parking and crossing the street. You will have gone from identifying with other drivers to identifying with other pedestrians. We have changed our hat, and our relationship with cars, without even noticing.
