Technical Skills

Learn these early in life! It is very important to put in the work earlier in your career span to learn technical skills. They are much harder to learn than a lot of other skills you can pick up. Being able to fully master/understand the skills in a certain field you are pursuing is instrumental.

It is important to learn the technical skills to be able to manage a product/understand the process that goes into developing aspects of the business. Another thing, is that it gives you concept of the culture at a business. A financial leader may be super influential in Wall St. but unable to do anything at Google because of the cultural difference. Having a technical background (or a background relevant to your field) is vital in understanding how people in that industry think.

Business/leadership skills can be picked up along the way the farther you go into a career path. It is much harder to develop technical skills the older you are than it is business skills. Putting time in now to learn the harder skills will allow you to move up quicker — need to have business skills, but need to have the technical skills in order to understand the process first.

I see these skills as having a large pay off for any career path that one chooses to go down. No matter where you think you are going to end up, practicing these will be advantageous. It is important to identify what you want to work on improving and then setting aside time in your day to work on those things/skills.
