Bedroom on a Budget: How We Created an HGTV Style Bedroom Makover on a $650 Budget

Not long ago we completed this bedroom makeover on a budget of only $650!
The finished space!
To be completely transparent, the $650 didn’t include any of our fees. However, it was the total budget for all the materials and furniture we purchased for the entire design. The good news here? If you’re willing to put in the time and work yourself, a space like this could be yours!
We were incredibly happy with the result especially on such a tight budget. In this post we’ll show you a few tricks of trade that saved us tons of money along the way.
Where we began!
Before…again.
All our client had at the onset of this bedroom project was a small upright dresser, a mattress and box spring, and a floor lamp (shown above). Other than those pieces everything else was purchased new!
Layout: We generally agree that the first wall you see when you walk into your bedroom is the wall that your bed should go on. This general rule of thumb plus the fact every other wall had a door or window in the middle of it made the layout of the room fairly easy. We placed the bed on the longest uninterrupted wall and since we wanted to offer at least one other additional seating area that little corner to the right of the window seemed like the obvious spot. Once we had the layout figured out, we could really start to plan the rest of the space. Here’s where the money savers kick in! Let’s walk it out!

Money Saving Bedroom Tip 1: The Bed. The fabric tufted beds are all the rage right now. To offer the same look for a fraction of the price, we opted for a fabric headboard only and paired it with a metal frame. This two pieces together were only about $160! We also caught an awesome sale at Walmart for the bedding. Honestly, we are not always fans of Walmart’s quality but their Better Homes & Garden line definitely has produced some real winners from time to time. This textured rouged comforter and shams in white for $60 was definitely one of them! Tip: Opt for a just the headboard over the entire bed for major savings!
Money Saving Bedroom Tip 2: The Nightstands. We actually built these two bedroom nightstands out of an old thrift store end table. You can see the tutorial here ! This saved us major bucks since the total cost for total project was was just under $40. Tip: You can make your own nightstands and save tons with a thrift store, a good eye, and a few basic tools.

Money Saving Bedroom Tip 3: Art. Another great savings was the focal piece behind the bed. We cut and whitewashed 1 ft x 8 ft strips of thin plywood called luan to give the bedroom a feminine yet rustic look and then found this intricately carved piece of mdf on clearance for $25 but there was a slight ding in it and we got the priced reduced again. The best thing about this situation was we didn’t care about the ding because we knew were going to spray paint it a charcoal gray. That color would really pop against the whitewashed wood! Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for a reduced price if you purchase something in less than perfect condition. All they can say is no.

Money Saving Bedroom Tip 4: Rugs, The bedroom had wall-to-wall carpet but we wanted to add texture but adding something new to the floor. It’s always important to remember that a room is made up of 6 surfaces not just 4. Yes there are 4 walls (usually) but you also must consider the ceiling and floor. We had the option to add a single large throw rug that could’ve cost hundreds. Instead we used two smaller faux fur rugs to achieve the same look for way less. Both of these rugs cost about $35 total. Tip: Two smaller inexpensive pieces can sometimes achieve the same look as a singular more expensive piece.

Our other major product purchase in this bedroom was this floral accent chair for $160.
We love the chair and it served as our item of inspiration for this project!
All of these tips saved us thousands but helped us create a gorgeous finished bedroom space. When you add up the total cost for the items we shared with throughout this post, they add up to right around $480 dollars. The additional $170 was spent on finishing touches like throw pillows, sheets, frames, candles, lamps, paint and all the little things that helped this bedroom produce a big result! We put on our bargain shopping hats and found many deals in order to end up with a space like this, and it was totally worth it!
