We haven’t right now many interdisciplinary groups centered around anticipating the counterfactual futures that innovation threatens. The role of tech journalism is too often driven by press releases and hype. Academics are rarely invited to speak on the ontological implications of a tech-enhanced humanity. Instead, we leave such speculations to Stross and Stephenson and hope for the best in the meanwhile — which is also fairly reckless considering the consequences. Not even Stross and Stephenson would say this is a healthy way for us to anticipate catastrophe.
